I have triops cancriformis. It says to add sand when the triops are 1/4 inch to 1/2 inches large. I think it is because the small triops need infusoria to feed on and sand may attract the infusoria/protozoa to the sand. There has to be enough infusoria per cm3 for the triops to filter feed off of then or they die. If you have java moss or elodea vera in your triops tank then it won't be a problem. Just add your sand if you have any of these plants. These plants support infusoria growth and therefore there will be more than enough infusoria for the triops to feed on. When you purchase your plant then make sure it wasn't in a tank with saltwater fish in it and make sure it was grown in clean water free of chlorine and chlomamine.
Infusoria is tiny microscopic..well almost microscopic single celled organisms that are small enough for your triops to eat.

It just keeps it "fresh" for children. By that I mean it gives them something to look forward to doing so they don't just get bored of it.
