Who has heard of “Triops”?

i went to a hobby store yesterday, and i found some triop eggs that are in suspended animation, for . you put it in water and follow instructions, and you hatch them and they live in the water.

i bought them and i need to wait around 13 hours til they hatch. who has done this before? is it a fun experience?
how much water are you supposed to have in the tank? i have a couple of centimeters.

  1. i've done it :)
the lasted for ages and got huge!
(well… not huge, but almost an inch long!)

they are the same as 'sea monkeys' – brine shrimp
in all honesty, its just the same as having a fish.
but they do look pretty funny, and get upto some crazy antics – its definately worth the $4
just cool little cheap pets :)

does it dont say how much water on the packet?
they need enough room to swim around, so you should fill whatever you have them in upto about 2cm or so away from the brim

I had triops as a kid. They are very cool to watch, but they don't live very long. In theory, if you give them a bit of sand they will lay more eggs. Mine never did though. They ended up jumping out of the tank and killing themselves :(

My triops came with a little tank. I think we just used about 4-5 in. of water.

  4. I love triops. But the bad news is, is that she died earlier today. The good news is, is that she gave me an excuse to get a better aquarium (well, it's not really an aquarium, just a Rubbermaid box, but it'll do), and over all, upgrade from the really crappy commercial tank.

A couple of centimetres are good for the hatch-lings, but you will need more than that. Try filling up the tank and inch from the top. You don't necessarily need to get it to that mark, it's more of a guide line, especially since triops like to dig through sand, looking for food.
